Kato’one Koloamatangi

Good Things End in Threes is a tentative conclusion to Koloamatangi’s understanding of her relationship to her late grandparents, an idea that extends from her recent graduating work. The number three operates as a bridge, offering a sense of stability to these complex feelings of loss and grief, while also contemplating the connections we have to others despite living on differing planes of existence (life and death, familiarity and unfamiliarity, here and there). This work presents an opportunity to speak to her grandparents who have gone, and simultaneously exist in the same space; each member of this conversation, a piece of ngatu.

Kato’one Koloamatangi is of Tongan descent, born and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau but spent her formative years in Ōtautahi. In her artistic practice she seeks to explore themes of cultural identity as well as her place within society as a Tongan woman. Kato’one is a multidisciplinary artist who works with various mediums depending on the given task. The current materials she utilises include charcoal, stone, tapa cloth and ink.

Ashleigh Taupaki (Ngāti Hako, Sāmoa) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, working primarily in object, drawing, and research practices. Systems of power are interrogated through iwi and place-specific narratives; with decolonial methodologies embedded in the material processes, and collection of stories and knowledge.
