Claudia Jowitt is an artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau of Pākeha and iTaukei (Fijian) heritage and has joined the Moana Fresh vuvale as a business collaborator and co-manager, bringing with her 10 years of experience of working in the commercial art sector with dealer galleries. She has also worked for many years with art supply retailers and interned at a fine art based auction house. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland’s Elam School of Fine Arts, a Bachelor of Art and Design (Hons) and Bachelor of Visual Arts from AUT University’s School of Art and Design and studied at Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Fine Arts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Jowitt has been exhibiting both nationally and internationally since first completing her undergraduate degree in 2009 and is represented by Melanie Roger Gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau and Bartley & Company Gallery in Pōneke. She is passionate about incorporating a Pacific worldview and ideology into both her creative and business practices. Along with supporting Pacific and Māori creatives in their professional development and supporting increased representation of Moana Nui a Kiwa in the arts sector.
Claudia is based at Moana Fresh but also teaches part-time on the Bachelor of Visual Arts at AUT University, Auckland.
My favourite Fijian kakana includes: kokoda (marinated raw fish), balolo (deep seaworm) fritters, ika vakalolo (fish in coconut cream), nama (seagrapes) and ota (fern leaf) with miti (seasoned coconut milk), suruwa (seafood curry, mud or land crab in particular with lots of rice and roti) and of course panikeke (fried pancakes, banana is best).
